review by music critic/Portland bass legend Arthur Beardsley:

I love writing reviews for this band. It hasn't been that long since their last release, "crows", thank god for that.
"dream action becomes the future" is il coltello/the knife's 3rd album and, like the albums before it, is refreshingly different while taking you down a comfortably familiar road and sometimes making you uncomfortable in a good way.
    So here goes.....
    1. "may day"
This is Post Modern Blues but beyond that I am at a loss. The lyric is lost in the resonance of il coltello/the knife cacophony. Then again, that might be intentional, I don't know. So I can't comment on the textual content but the sonic content gets your attention and (kind of) prepares you for what follows.
    2. "too many names"
It's sad such a song can be written or even needs to be written. It goes to the heart of what is wrong in America today with the inequality afforded people of color and police abuses of power. If Frank Zappa had written Trouble Comin' Every Day yesterday it would have sounded like this.
    3. "what you had to dream"
I woke up with the ambience of a Cigarettes After Sex song in my head. I know it was an important dream but....I woke up with the ambience of a Cigarettes After Sex song in my head...
    4. "someone will weigh us"
And we will be found wanting. Electric guitar as Theremin with an incessant backbeat.
    5. "late june"
Lurching jazzy Brubeck in 4/4 played in cut time. Kinda like if Hip Hop had been based on jazz.
    6. "you got your sales from us"
This is what it's like inside the head of a late night TV salesman during the psychedelic 60's after taking some acid and listening to White Rabbit and It's A Beautiful Day at the same time.
    7. "dream action becomes the future"
And what a Dream-State future it is. il coltello/the knife channels the Pixies but in a different dimension. It's like if Frank Black penned a song with John Cage on electric guitar and Kim Deal on bass. I wanted to sing "Gigantic" over this.
Again Il coltello-the-knife exceeds expectations by giving us something unexpected.
Once again I await the next release with bated breath. A new Il coltello-the-knife release is like a birthday and Christmas present all rolled into one and you get (so far) more than one of these presents a year. How cool is that?

about

What is the purpose of music? Is it to create a space where we can feel certain emotions? And why can't we feel these emotions in the real material world so that we feel a need to seek for them in music? What satisfactions are denied us so that we turn to music for fulfillment? And why/how are these satisfactions denied? (Among other purposes of music! there are clearly others...) Perhaps music can point us in the direction of how to answer these and other questions...
